What Made Tet Holiday Even More Special

While everyone is enjoying celebrating Tet Holiday, a single mother, tagging her daughter along more out of necessity than luxury, goes about her usual day working cleaning the street. But little do they know that this seemingly ordinary mother and daughter bonding will catch the eye of someone and touch the hearts of many not only in Vietnam but all over the world.

Truong Thi Thom is a 28-year old mother who works as a street cleaner and is separated from her husband with two children, an 8-year old son and a 5-year old daughter named Trang. Her in-laws take care of their children while they work in Hanoi. But on that particular day, February 10, the third day of the Lunar New Year, she decided to take her daughter along with her while working because she wasn’t able to have a long holiday break and wanted to spend more time with her children.

Wearing a pink coat over a red dress, the little girl was happy just to be with her mother and even helped her sweep the street even with the broom bigger than her and push their cart full of fallen leaves. It is this particular moment that a participant at the festivity, Ho Hai Hoang, saw how the mother and daughter seemed oblivious from all the merriment around them and just went about their regular day. But it is this indifference from the world and their focus in each other that made Hoang see the beauty in what they were doing, and so he took several pictures of the Thom and Trang, posted it on the internet, and as they say, the rest is history.

Thom was obviously surprised that their ordinary actions in that day warmed the hearts of many people around the globe, and she expressed her sincere gratitude to everyone for appreciating her and her daughter.
