Pac Ngoi Stilt Houses: Tourist Attraction

Pac Ngoi Stilt Houses: Tourist Attraction

While most provinces no longer use and have removed their traditional stilt houses to pave the way for modern architecture, Pac Ngoi Village remains loyal to its history and have preserved the unique antique houses of their ancestors even in their original form.

Located at Bac Kan Province, Pac Ngoi has over 40 traditional stilt houses situated at the slope of the mountains surrounding Ba Be Lake. Its simplicity yet raw beauty has made it a popular eco-tourism destination.

Aside from being able to witness the stilt houses in their authentic state, visitors are also given the rare opportunity to be able to stay in the traditional abodes themselves. This includes practicing the customs of the ethnic people such as taking off the shoes as soon as they step on the staircase. Once inside, the tourists are asked to gather around the fireplace, like the ancestors used to, and listen to the economic and political history of the ancient times. This usually becomes a moment of solidity as visitors are left enthralled at both the simplicity and complexity of the system during that era.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Pac Ngoi Village is that it's not that their residents do not have the financial capacity to build modern houses. In fact, they do. But it is their pure love and respect for their ethnic heritage that made them decide to preserve and protect their ancestors' traditional houses. For them, it is the identity that holds them together both as a community and individuals.
