Mang Den: Nature in its Glory

Mang Den: Nature in its Glory

Mang Den Ecotourism is among the few and rare untouched nature spots today. With ethnic tribes, exotic wildlife, and spectacular view still abundant albeit in fragile condition in the area, being able to visit the site is a one-of-a-kind encounter you may never experience again.
Mang Den Ecotourism is located at Kon Tum Province. To reach the place, one has to go through Mang Den Pass, the final destination at National Road 24. It covers an area of about 12 kilometers and has 120 sharp bends, which means there are 10 bends for every kilometer, or 1 bend per 100 meters. These sharp bends run through a pine forest about 1,000 meters above sea level. For the adventurous ones, this would be among their most exciting and memorable rides.
There's so much to behold at Mang Den Ecotourism. Mangden to mean “vast” and “flat” in literal terms, it's no surprise that the place is teeming with natural beauty. Rich forests; fresh lakes, springs and waterfalls; majestic sunset; and breathaking sunrise; are just some of nature's gift to the site. The climate is cool and fresh the whole year round at 20 degress Celsius. There's a certain kind of serenity in the place and one will feel that only nature can provide.
Mang Den is moreover home to rare and exotic flora and fauna. Red pine trees; Fufian Cypress; (medicinal plants) cinnamon and aquilaria; white daisy; and purple ageratum conyzoides are just some of the wild flowers that can be found here. Meanwhile, pythons; chamois; and other hard-to-find species have made the ecotoursim site their habitat.
As if nature's gift is not enough, Mang Den is also a holy land where stands the statue “Our Handless Blessed Mother Mang Den.” Placed on the highest hill and standing at one meter high, the structure is frequently and increasingly visited by pilgrims every year. Khanh Lam Pagoda stands on a 10-hectare land with a towering 18-meter tall statue of the “Bodhisattva of Mercy.”
Among the famous bodies of water at Mang Den are the Dak So Nghe River; Toong Dam, Toong Rpong, Dac Ke, Toong Zo Ri, and Toong Po lakes; Tu Rang; Nuoc Ka, Dac Ke, and Pa Sy waterfalls and rapids. The latter in particular stands at a majestic 50 meters in height and takes 100 steps to be reached. Near the waterfall is a statue garden made up of 100 creations carved from tree trunks and mde by ethnic artists living in the community.
Several ethnic tribes can be found at Mang Den: M'Nong, Xo Dang, K'Dong and Hre. These native communities have remarkably preserved their traditional lifestyles, unique culture and customs, and special crafts. The M'Nong group is known for making eccentric brocades. The Xo Dang community is good at making simple yet smart and one-of-a-kind production tools while the K'Dong people produce spohisticated metal items. Visitors have the privilege of joining the ethnic people in celebrating their festivals such as the one that prays for rain and one which rejoices “happy new rice.”
Local delicacies in Mang Den are sturgeon and wild vegetables soup, wild banana inflorescense tossed in oil and vinegar, dried buffalo meat, bamboo rice, and wild chicken baked with “e” leaves. Mangden cuisine is basically simple, yet sumptuous and in fact addicting because of their freshness, literally from nature around it.
While the place may seem appropriate only for the adult and old people, Mangden has increased its popularity even among the younger generation. In fact, in 2012, 50,000 tourists visited the place, a 150 percent increase from 2011. Most of these visitors came from Can Tho, Vung Tau, HCM City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Quang Ngai, and Gia Lai. Since 2006, Mangden Eotourism has established its place on the national tourism map. It is part of the “Green Road in Central Highlands” tourism route which is connected to the “Central Heritage Road” and “Legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail” which make up the transnational “Indochina Heritage Road” linking world heritage sites in the country to those in Laos and Cambodia.
Mang Den stands apart from the other ecotourism sites and any place in general in that it is virtually untouched by modernization. After all this time, Mangden has carefully respected and maintained the purity of nature around it. Because of this, the Prime Minister this yar has approved a master plan to transform the place into a national park, nature reserve and tourism zone. This way, Mang Den can continue to preserve the gift nature has bestowed upon it and be able to share it to the world at the same time.
