Long Tuyen: History and Architecture

Long Tuyen is home to not one, not two, neither three, but six national relics. It also features a one-of-a-kind, traditional lifestyle along the Mekong River Delta, not to mention its breathtaking channel landscape. It's no surprise then that it is among the most visited tourist destinations in Can Tho City.

Long Tuyen has a rich history in the birth of the place itself. Before Can Tho Province was created, it used to be a subdivision of Luc Ap. During the rule of King Thieu Triking of the Nguyen Dynasty, it became known as Binh Hung Village. In 1852, a province chief named Huynh Man Dat renamed the village Binh Thuy.

A communal house is one, if not the most, famous attractions at Long Tuyen because of its amazing architecture and antiques. It was built in the 19th century, almost two centuries old today. It was named Bon Canh Thanh Hoang by King Tu Duc on November 9, 1893 and later made to honor national heroes such as Dinh Cong Trang, Nguyen Trung Truc, Bui Huu Nghia and Vo Huy Tap. In 1910, the communal house underwent a complete renovation.

The communal house at Long Tuyen stands out from those in the North in that it has a unique and high-end design. The front and back buildings are square, the side has six rows of columns, and all the bases of the columns are wider than usual, making them more stable. The roofs of the two front buildings are built with an overlapping design. The main temple at the back of the building has three roofs. The top of the roof is embellished with statues of people, lions and fish. There are many cement columns at the front of the communal house. Altars for celebrating the animal gods are placed at the ancestor-worshipping house.

The communal house of Long Tuyen was built at the start of the 20th century. Yet, its architecture represents traditional style as reflected in the carved and engraved wooden boards. Its bas-reliefs, lacquered boards, grand costumes, and ancient paintings also signify a community rich in art. All in all, Long Tuyen is a symbol of exceptional architecture, antique and art, a clear evidence of a lucky community for having an interesting and overall rich history.
