Investments Urged to Improve Son Doong Tourism

Recognized as the World’s Largest Cave that is more than five km long, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide, the Son Doong Cave is also known for a bewitching beauty and charm many yet have to explore. Apart from the breathtaking photos, only a few have actually witnessed the breathtaking landscape, uniquely sophisticated grottos and caves and rich geological, archeological values cradled inside this gigantic structure.

Around 10 years ago, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang grotto system was named a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site yet surprisingly, not many tourists go out of their way to see the caves even after the National Geographic channel aired a 45-minute documentary on Son Doong cave in the late 2010. A group of British cavers discovered Son Doong and were awed by its almost untouched state. Howard Limbert, head of the British Cave Research Association, believes that the cave has great potential for tourism and development as well as for scientific research into its floral composition.

However, such potential would not be realized unless significant investments are put into place in order to make the attraction more inviting to tourists. Despite its rich tourism potentials, the cave in a way remained a dormant beauty. Though few  improvements has been implemented, the area remains dull and inert for what should be a hustling, packed tourist attraction. Authorities admit of the challenges on protecting the environment while promoting this type of tourism. After it was recently opened to public, a group of first foreign tourist had been successful in fully exploring Son Doong in seven days.

At $3000, the cost to see the beauty inside the cave walls is quite steep. A Vietnamese woman, Nguyen M.H, was currently featured on the News for spending such as a special treat for her birthday. For those who have been to the same exploration, they admit that the price is indeed high compared to other tour offers. However, they also submit how the experience is worth every dollar paid. Limbert believes that relevant authorities should work out a reasonable and workable investment mechanism, as coupled with revised policies and programs to attract more visitors to Son Doong in the future.
