Growing tourism in Vietnam despite economy crisis

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the country targets to triple its revenue to around US$10-11 billion by the year 2015. Currently Vietnam has more than 700 international travel firms and a large number of domestic travel companies with more than 10,000 accommodation facilities with some 200,000 rooms. In the year 2015 the country’s tourism sector expects to welcome seven to eight million foreign visitors and around 32 million local tourists. To compare, there were 4.2 international tourists and revenue of around US$ 3.5 billion in 2008.

The current growth rate is slowing down in 2009. The original forecasted number, according to which the tourism administration expected to receive around six million foreign visitors in 2010, is now unlikely to be reached. Due to the economic crisis, Vietnam received merely 3.4 million international travellers in this year to date, corresponding to a decrease of 12.3%. Despite this fact the Vietnam tourism industry remains optimistic to grow strongly in the next years. It is eagerly building new products, developing markets as well as building the national tourism images among others.
