Discover Four Seasons in One Day at Tam Dao

Tam Dao is a 253-hectare, hollow-shaped valley in Tam Dao Town, Vinh Phuc Province discovered by the French in 1902. Located about 90 kilometers from Hanoi, it is considered the Dalat of the North because of its breathtaking scenery. But most of all, it is known for having four seasons in one day because of its 900-meter elevation from the sea. As such, the place has become a popular tourist destination.

When the French first stumbled upon Tam Dao, they intended to turn it into a resting place for the soldiers because of its relaxing atmosphere. So they constructed about 150 villas which were complete with amenities like sports services, discos, swimming pools, restaurants and churches.

Tam Dao has a majestic mountain named Nha Tho which literally means “church.” Coincidentally, there is a church at the foot of the mountain which was built in 1906 and originally made of old stone to resemble a stilt house. In 1937, it was renovated with bricks and stones. The structure is so big that one can see it no matter where he or she is in the valley, especially the bell tower. One of its most important features is a semi-circular hard arch. It has an overall Gothic and strong design which are basic characteristics of French colonial architecture.

The Bac Waterfall is another famous tourist spot at Tam Dao. Situated down a deep valley in the center of a mountain from the capital of Tam Dao Town, its 300 steps may be long and gruelling, but totally worth it once tourists gaze at the carpet-like whiteness of the water shimmering under the equally magnificent sunlight. Summer is the best time to visit Tam Dao when the air is fresh and cool and the atmosphere is misty but romantic.
