Cyclo: A Necessity in Simplicity

Cyclo: A Necessity in Simplicity

While most cars today have become like a trend, that is, they are very popular for a certain period of time but don't last that long because a new model keeps coming out, the cyclo of Vietnam is one that has stood and will always stand in time. Basically simple, if not ordinary, in fact even backward with its absence of engine and other modern technology gadgets today, the cyclo is the primary means of transportation in Vietnam for generations passed because of such: its simplicity. Yet this simplicity in both design and function is so basic that not only the local residents use it for their everyday errands, but foreigners as well love riding the cyclo for its uniqueness and authenticity.

Cyclo drivers in the same manner, no matter how difficult it can be driving under the sweltering heat and heavy with one or more passengers to carry, hold on to this means of living because it has been the bread and butter which sustained their families for the longest time.Unlike cabs and other commercial transportations which have “technical service” and take you directly to your destination, the cyclo is more “personal,” taking you to intimate and secret places perhaps the taxis will never take you to. With a little hand gestures and a simple conversation, the driver can take you to shopping areas with the lowest prices, or to quiet, peaceful places where you can have a moment of solitude and recollection.

Of course, it can take you to the popular tourist destinations in the country like the Sword Lake, the famous sunset at Tran Phu Street, the ancient citadel, the flower-perfumed streets of Hanoi, and Nha Trang and Da Nang beaches, just to name a few.Even big cities honor cyclos in their streets because of their practicality and historical significance. Many wedding ceremonies today also employ the presence of the vehicle in their celebration to signify the harmonious union of the simplicity of the old days and the “dynamism” of the modern world. In fact, the cyclo is more than a vehicle that transports its passengers from one destination to the other.

Especially over time and with the development of tourism, the cyclo has become both an indispensable part of Vietnam's history and a daily companion to, although sometimes goes unnoticed, locals as they go around their hometown in their daily undertakings, and tourists alike as they tour around the city to see and appreciate its beauty. The cyclo therefore is, albeit humble, but a solid fixture in a person's memory living in or visiting Vietnam.
