Cu Lao Cham Island: Where the Sky and Sea Meet

Cu Lao Cham Island is a 20-minute boat ride, 15 kilometers from Cua Dai Quay, a paradise where the sky and the sea seem to meet with the abundance and beauty of nature all in one place. Cu Lao Cham Island is composed of seven more islets. It covers an area of more than 15 square kilometers with 1,549 hectares of natural forest and 6,716 hectares of open water. It has a diverse ecosystem that is home to different species of plants and fish. Naturally, fishing is the main source of livelihood of the local residents.

Lang Beach is one of the three main beaches in Ho Lao, the biggest islet in the island. But aside from the beaches, there’s so much to see and experience in Cu Lao Cham. A small, local museum can be found in Hon Lao, the biggest islet in the island, where you can learn about the history and life in the island. Different kinds of marine animals that can be found in the island are also in display at the museum.

Au Thuyen and Hai Tang Pagoda are other sites you can visit in the islet of Hon Lao. Au Thuyen is a storm shelter for boats while the pagoda is a soothing sight being located beside a small green field. One can also treat himself to a special tea found only in the area, made from medicinal leaves and very good for the digestive system and one’s sense of well-being as a whole.

If you’re in the mood for seafood, you can buy fresh seafood at the local market. One impressive feature of the place is its environmental awareness and protection. The roads are noticeably clean and plastic bags are not allowed. Dried products are wrapped in paper and fresh products placed in jute or straw sacks.

If you want to go snorkeling, there are several beaches great for the sport. Xep Beach and the islets of Tai, Dai and Mo are famous for snorkeling as well as coral reef exploration. In fact, Cu Lao Cham was recently voted as the newest snorkeling paradise in Vietnam alongside the already famous snorkeling spots such as Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Con Dao. Moreover, the island has also been named by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Chong Beach is another popular, beautiful beach in the Cu Lao Cham Island. The natural sea breeze and crystal clear blue waters are more than enough to soothe one’s body and senses. But more than that, there are hammocks under shady coconut trees for guests to lie down and relax in while waiting for their food or simply enjoying the beauty of the place. The beach is perfect for swimming and
sunbathing, and their albeit small restaurant serves the freshest and most delectable seafood dishes you can find.

Cu Lao Cham Island, with its many islets, several beautiful beaches and other spectacular destinations and sights, is one trip equivalent to many vacations, an experience you want to repeat and a memory you will forever hold special.
