Cu Lao Cau will bring nothing but pure awe, admiration and respect from visitors coming to the island. Known for its smooth sloping sandy beach, blue seawater, endlessly hills and mountains that create charming landscape, Cu Lao Cau can indeed be a jewel in Binh Thuan Province.

Majority of the province is rich in human and natural potentialities, making it viable for tourism. The province has a coastal line of close to 200 km, mostly with beautiful beaches in it. Mui Ne, Ca Na, Cu Lao Cau are just among the many.

The tiny Cu Lao Cau island is located in Tuy Phong District, about 9 km away from the seashore. It is formed by a 1.5 kilometer-long steep range of rocks. From a far distance, the island looks like the back of a naiad in the legend with rolling mass of adhesive stones, creating an ancient citadel and rampart to confront against the storms blowing suddenly from the East Sea. About 119 km away from Phan Thiet City to the Northeast, it takes around 40 minutes to reach the island by boat, depending on the departure point. To reach this island, one may take any of the many landing wharf in the town of Lien Huong, Hidden Phuoc, Vinh Tan commune, Vinh Hao. Transportation to the island are mainly fishing boats operated by fishermen.

The island’s highest point is at 27m. The water around the island is always clean and blue. When the tide goes down, numerous beautiful shells and corals can be clearly seen - a joy to tourists. Several kinds of sea creatures live around the island. A fresh water well, which is called a Fairy Well from an old book, is also among the most-visited. The well is just a deep concave on a large rock, but it can accumulate a huge course of fresh and clear water all year round.

Fringing coral reefs can be found around Cu Lao Cau island and platform reefs on submerged banks. The reefs are pristine, with an average cover of 43%. This site supports the highest diversity of hermatypic corals known in the country. There are more than 65 genera of corals found in the island including Acropora, Goniopora, Montipora, Porites, and Favia. It also has a small area of seagrass bed. Sea currents from the north and south converge near Hon Cau-Vinh Hao, with strong upwelling. The area has high productivity, with 175 phytoplankton species, 163 seaweed species, 147 coral species, 80 mollusc species, 46 crustacean species, 26 echinoderm species and 211 fish species so far recorded in Cu Lao Cau.

There has not been any population that is full of shapes and colors and brings a lot of emotion to visitors like in this island. With its stable tropical marine biodiversity, this island becomes a place of birth and growth of plentiful aquatic species. Cu Lau Cau Island is not only a meaningful place for local fishermen in the ways of earning their living as the name mentioned in the natural potential conservation planning, but it also opens a new types of marine eco-tourism for the locality. The island is truly promising and holds strong potential as an ecological tourist destination.
