Infamous for its “one-of-a-kind” jail system during the war, Con Dao Island used to be identified as a “Hell on Earth.” But today, the place has come far from its negative image to a promising, beautiful sanctuary of nature and peace. Con Dao Island is located off the mainland of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. Its capital is situated ten kilometers from Co Ong Airport and can be seen on air when approaching the said area. The island is a haven of nature with its abundance of forests, mountains, cliffs, ocean, sea, flowers and trees. The waters of Con Dao Island are a tourist magnet because of their magical blue color.

Dam Trau is one of the most popular beaches in the island because of its crystal clear waters. Evergreen trees also flourish and seem to shelter the whole area, a guarantee of fresh air and pure relaxation all the time. Tropical Almond, Flamboyant, Frangipani and Crape Myrtle are some of the ancient trees which surround the area. Flamboyant Tree is known for its bright red color. Frangipani Tree has an amazing big canopy. Crape Myrtle Tree grows lovely purple flowers. One cannot see street vendors or any drinking establishments at Con Dao. But visitors can hang out in some cafes which are interestingly situated under the many Tropical Almond Trees to provide both a restful and scenic atmosphere. As in most provinces, the market of Con Dao is frequented by both locals and tourists because of its variety of products which come complete for people’s daily needs and even for luxury and entertainment like for souvenirs.

Aside from its natural beauty, Con Dao Island is also blessed with culture and history. The Phi Yen Temple and Prince Cai Tomb are famous tourist destinations. Many important relics are preserved. For those who love adventure, visitors can hop to the smaller islands Con Dao is composed of. The administration is especially conscious about taking care of its environment and so is also active in helping baby turtles hatch from their eggs and journey to the ocean.
