Chau Giang Khmer and Cham Communities

Chau Giang Khmer and Cham Communities

Chau Giang is a rich community of ethnic Cham, Khmer and Vietnamese located directly across the river from downtown Chau Doc. And for tourists who love the culture, this is a place definitely worth visiting.

The Mekong is home to many mosques and Khmer style wooden houses. The Mubarak Mosque is one of the most popular mosques in the area. These designs are actually more common than the Vietnamese style homes. The place can be accessed either by renting a bicycle (from Chau Doc's downtown ferry terminal to Chau Giang) or even by foot.

The Khmer and Cham communities are what remains of many colonizations throughout the centuries. Cham Kingdom conquered Southern Vietnam before but was overpowered by the Southward movement of the Viet people. Before the Vietnamese' gradual invasion over the past three centuries, Vietnam's Mekong Delta territory used to be colonized by the Khmer. As such, the Mekong Delta towns of Chau Doc, Soc Trang and Tra Vinh today are composed of a great number of Khmer communities.

There are no particularly interesting spots at Chau Giang, but for visitors who like the outdoors, they may find the place unusually enjoyable by renting and riding a bicycle or simply walking around the place and learn about the unique diversity of the community. The local people are very friendly, too so guests can always expect a warm reception.
