Bien Ho Lake: An Ocean On The Mountain

Bien Ho Lake: An Ocean On The Mountain

If you’re a nature lover but want something extraordinary other than the usual beaches, pools and scenic sights, try Bien Ho or T’Nung Lake in the South of Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province, Tay Nguyen Area. Also known as “Pleiku’s Eyes” as described by a popular musician, this freshwater lake is one-of-a-kind because it is as big as an ocean and situated on a mountain.

As the names suggest, Bien Ho literally means “as big as an ocean” and T’Nung “ocean on mountain.” The lake is oval-shaped and one of the largest in Tay Nguyen covering an area of more than 230 hectares and 30 metres deep.

The way to the lake itself is already a treat as it is filled with a lush forest all throughout. On top of the mountain are charming stilt houses reflective of the Tay Nguyen culture. Upon arriving at the place, one will be in awe by the clarity of the water and the freshness of the air. The area is also rich in flora and fauna. Fish is guaranteed fresh every day as the lake is more than big enough for them to thrive.

On the surface of the lake, the reflection of Ham Rong Peak is very visible. According to local belief, this “duality” is a symbol of fertility. The peak resembles the male erection, while the lake is the womb of the woman. They also signify Linga and Yoni; and yin and yang, Bien Ho being yin and Ham Rong Peak yang. They are both believed to reside deep inside Mother Earth, another cultural characteristic of the Tay Nguyen.

Legend has it that Pleiku used to be a busy town. But everything changed when all the buffalos and cows in the place suddenly died in a period of one year. Fearing that they did something to make their Giang (God) angry, the villagers offered a deer as sacrifice. But instead of feeling pardoned, the ground shook violently that the whole village sank, causing a flood that killed everyone. The only ones spared were the Mac May family who were away visiting relatives at the time. This is how Bien Ho Lake was said to come about.

Bien Ho Lake is also called the “jade stone” along with other mysterious stories of its origin. But whether they are true or not, the naturally stunning beauty of the place is more than enough to bring about an unforgettable experience and create a lasting memory for everyone who have personally witnessed it.
