Ancient Canoes Discovered in Hue

700-year old dugout wooden canoes were discovered along the Huong (Perfume) River in ${bigcity_Hue:"Hue"}. The ancient artifacts were found by two scrap metal scavengers as they were working along the river. According to one of Hue’s cultural researcher Ho Tan Phan, the men discovered broken pieces of the hull and bulwark of a trio of dugout canoes. Phan stated that the boats were perhaps built by Cham inhabitants of Hue about 700 years ago.

Compared to the canoes made under the Vietnamese reign, these particular vessels are different in that the carvings are quite primitive in comparison to the Vietnamese canoes.  This is the third time remnants of historical wooden dugout canoes have been discovered in the Huong River of Hue. The second and last time such vessels were found by the river was in 2008.
